Plant-Based, Whole-Food Diet Linked to Type 2 Diabetes Remission
A plant-predominant diet that includes mainly whole foods can significantly improve blood sugar control and may lead to complete remission of type 2 diabetes, according to a recent study. Overall, 37% of study participants achieved full remission by following this type of diet.
The study was a small one that involved 59 participants aged 41-89 who all had type 2 diabetes. They were “prescribed” a plant-predominant diet that was low in fat and high in fiber and were instructed to avoid animal-based and processed products. Small amounts of egg white and low-fat dairy were allowed.
Each diet intervention lasted for 6 or more months. Even though not every participant achieved diabetes remission, 46% were able to discontinue their diabetes-related medication. For those who did experience remission, it took an average of 1.7 years to reach this result.
No single diet has been identified as being the most beneficial for type 2 diabetes. The guidelines for this specific study aimed for 75% of calories to come from complex carbs, 15% from plant protein, and 10% from fat. Vegetables, legumes, whole grains, fruits, nuts, and seeds were the most consumed foods.
Air Pollution Speeds Bone Loss, May Increase Fracture Risk
Living in an area with elevated levels of air pollutants is associated with a greater risk of bone damage in postmenopausal women, some new research has found. The effects appear to be greatest on the lumbar spine, which is the lower back region of the spinal column, with nitrous oxides being the most damaging pollutants.
“Our findings confirm that poor air quality may be a risk factor for bone loss, independent of socioeconomic or demographic factors,” said Diddier Prada, MD, PhD, a study author. “For the first time, we have evidence that nitrogen oxides, in particular, are a major contributor to bone damage and that the lumbar spine is one of the most susceptible sites of this damage,”
The researchers used data from the Women’s Health Initiative study that included over 161,000 ethnically diverse postmenopausal women. They also estimated air pollution levels based on home addresses and measured bone density at 1-, 3-, and 6-year follow ups.
Given the findings, the study authors believe that reducing nitrous oxide emissions from cars, trucks, and electrical power generation plants could be key for protecting bone health. Possible at-home measures against pollutants include using a quality HEPA air filter.

Main Causes of Under-Eye Bags + Top Natural Solutions
Under-eye bags are a very common sign of aging, but have you ever wondered why they form? The main reason is that the tissues under your eyes weaken with age, causing the skin to sag. Then, fat and/or fluid migrates to this area, resulting in the familiar “bags”. There are some short-term tricks— like cold compresses and tea bags— that will decrease under-eye puffiness right away. In the long term, natural antioxidant and vitamin C ingredients are key to making bags look less noticeable. (More)
5 Health Benefits of Cayenne Pepper, Including Pain Relief
Cayenne peppers are rich in vitamin C, vitamin A, vitamin K, and vitamin B6 as well as powerful antioxidants. They get their spicy kick from a potent compound known as capsaicin that has shown pain-relieving properties (especially when used topically) and helps reduce inflammation. Studies have also found that cayenne can benefit heart health, speed up a sluggish digestion, and help boost metabolism. (More)
Eating More Vitamin K Foods Could Decrease Your Fracture Risk
You may know that nutrients like calcium and vitamin D are important for bone health, but there’s one that often gets overlooked: Vitamin K. Researchers have now confirmed that it plays a key role in bone toughness, and getting enough of it could cut fracture risk by nearly half later in life. Consuming at least 100 micrograms of vitamin K1 per day is the goal, which can easily be achieved by eating about 125 grams (1-2 servings) of leafy green vegetables. (More)
Microwave Popcorn Increases PFAS Levels in Your Body
PFAS (short for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are a group of synthetic chemicals linked to harmful effects like hormone disruption and increased cancer risk. These chemicals are often used in nonstick products— including the inner lining of microwave popcorn bags. Unfortunately, researchers have confirmed that PFAS do accumulate in regular microwave popcorn eaters. In fact, those who ate microwave popcorn daily had up to 63% higher levels of PFAS than average. 10 Worst Foods to Eat at Bedtime
Going to sleep hungry can make it difficult to fall asleep but having the wrong kind of bedtime snack is even worse. High fat foods like potato chips and red meat take a long time to digest, which may keep you up at night— and potentially give you nightmares. Though delicious, chocolate contains caffeine that may keep you awake, and spicy foods can trigger heartburn when you lay down. Anything high in sugar isn’t a good choice, either. (More)
